Kalispel Tribe of Indians
Pioneers in Preservation: Living in Harmony with the Pend Oreille Watershed
The Kalispel Tribe of Indians, known historically as the “River and Lake Paddlers,” have long lived in balance with the forests, rivers, and lakes of the Inland Northwest. From their reservation in Usk, Washington, the Kalispel people continue to thrive by honoring their traditions, protecting natural resources, and building a resilient future for generations to come.
Brief Tribe History
The Kalispel people were semi-nomadic hunters, fishers, and gatherers, navigating the waterways and woodlands of what is now northeastern Washington and northwestern Montana. During the 1800s, as U.S. expansion advanced, the Upper Kalispel were relocated to the Jocko Reservation in Montana. However, the Lower Kalispel—ancestors of today’s tribal members—refused to abandon their ancestral lands and remained in the Pend Oreille region.
Without the protection of a formal treaty, the Kalispel faced decades of struggle, losing access to vast portions of their homeland while their population declined dramatically. By the early 20th century, much of their remaining reservation land was considered undevelopable. In response, the Tribe adopted a bold, entrepreneurial spirit—creating innovative paths forward while preserving their cultural identity and connection to the land.
Today, the Kalispel Tribe is a model of resilience and renewal. They have built a vibrant community rooted in tradition, focused on sustainable growth, and committed to the long-term health of their people and environment.

Key Programs & Partnerships
The Kalispel Natural Resource Department (KNRD) leads the Tribe’s environmental stewardship efforts, managing water, fish, wildlife, and cultural resources across the reservation and surrounding ceded lands. Their mission includes preserving natural habitat, restoring fish populations, and enhancing water quality throughout the Pend Oreille watershed.
KNRD collaborates with state, federal, and tribal partners to manage fisheries, monitor ecological health, and recover endangered species. The Tribe is a recognized leader in hatchery development, wildlife protection, and environmental education—blending traditional knowledge with modern science to care for the ecosystem.
Beyond natural resources, the Kalispel Tribe invests in education, youth services, and community well-being, all while maintaining a deep commitment to cultural preservation and tribal sovereignty.
